Justin Hampton -
Justin Hampton has been creating high impact imagery since his arrival on the scene in 1990. He began his tenure in Seattle working for famed graphic designers Art Chantry and Jeff Kleinsmith at the Rocket Magazine. A decade and a half later, he is renowned as one of the leaders in the modern rock poster scene and has garnered international attention. His bold line work and sublime color palette mixed with a vivid imagination are unmistakable. His work can be seen in various galleries in Europe, Asia and Australia as well as the in states.
Born in Santa Cruz California, his influences are pop culture based from album art and skatepunk to contemporary comic book artists like Jack Kirby and Mike Mignola. His style is heavily influenced by comic book art, and he has the greatest respect and admiration for those who draw comics for a living. He particularly is impressed by their natural abilities to draw from life, “interpreting the natural flow of movement”. His work is also influenced by pop culture and its icons, as is evidenced in his homage to Warhol’s iconic cover for The Velvet Underground’s 1967 debut “The Velvet Underground & Nico”.
His clients have included RollingStone, Spin, Sports Illustrated, Village Voice, Maxim, Vibe, FHM, Premiere, ESPN Magazine, Details, Hustler, Blender, The Paramount Theatre, Bike, Scene, Guitar World, Snowboarder, The Seattle Weekly and The Rocket.
Recording industry clients include Dreamworks and Interscope Records, and he's done CD/album covers for Seattle-based bands such as The Fakes, Millhous and Prince Chubby. He has silk-screened images for the likes of Bob Dylan, Danger Mouse, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Marilyn Manson, Motorhead and Queens Of The Stone Age, to name a few (Seattle's Experience Music Project has archived countless numbers of his prints as well as originals for their permanent museum collection). More recently, he has worked on ad campaigns for Dr. Martens shoes, Target and Nordstrom. His posters have also appeared in various television shows and motion pictures.
Hampton's comic books "Twitch" and "Rat" have also received rave reviews. Always seeking to push his artistic boundaries, Hampton has tried his hand at animation. His short "The Jaded Monk", based on a character of his own creation, was accepted to the 2002 Seattle International Film Festival and the 2003 One Reel Fesitval.
Justin resides in Seattle with his wife and son.
