Remembered as the album that brought us "Kashimir" and that has brought countless tourists to 97 St. Mark's Place in New York's Lower East Side, artist Peter Corriston (also responsible for some great covers for the Rolling Stones) worked with designer Mike Doud to convince Led Zeppelin manager, Peter Grant, that the cover art idea was a good one.
Unlikely as it may seem, the concept was itself heavily influenced by the design for Jose Feliciano’s album, Compartments. The new version was created by using a photograph of a New York apartment block, and the building is still standing today. In the basement is a second-hand clothes shop named, naturally, "Physical Graffiti".
Although Physical Graffiti was originally designed to be the debut release on the Swan Song label, the album’s elaborate cover art (which features interchangeable images visible through the building’s die-cut windows - unfortunately, not possible in this art print!), forced a delay. Bad Company's "Bad Company" was therefore released first, but due to the strength of PG's material and packaging, it rose to #1 on the charts.
